The ugly plan threatening our beautiful town.
Transcanada is pushing to expand a major gas pipeline that sits within 1,900 feet of Brookfield’s middle school.
The town said no to the pipeline compressor station in 2006. The pipeline operators side-stepped safety regulations and installed it anyway.
Between 2013 and 2016, the pipeline operators were fined for their safety failures and admitted guilt.
Now, they are trying to expand again. And they don’t want you to know about it.
1900 feet is
Why did Brookfield say no from the beginning?
Because pipeline expansion threatens the safety of over 800 middle schoolers.
Gas pipelines and compressor stations explode. This has happened in Oklahoma, Texas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. These explosions resulted in catastrophic damage that radiated for miles. It’s going to happen again. Schools, homes, and businesses nearby could experience horrific trauma including explosive fires, displacement, and long term health risks from air and water pollution. Situating a pipeline near a school is already profoundly irresponsible. Any consideration of expansion risks our children’s lives and our town’s livelihood.
Because we take on all of the risk and a transnational corporation gets all the benefit.
Brookfield is headed for a gas pipeline expansion, yet what's in it for us? Absolutely nothing. Our property values are at risk of plummeting, there's a tangible threat to safety, and potential environmental contaminants could jeopardize our health. Worse, this project won't lower our energy costs, provide significant tax revenue, or create job opportunities for Brookfield.
Instead, a non-American company reaps the rewards at our town's expense. It's not just shortsighted; it’s a blatant disregard for the welfare of Brookfield, with the gains funneled elsewhere. We must demand better.
